about

Kailene Godheight was little known during her lifetime. Ms. Godheight was born in 1950, in a small, remote village deep in the Scottish highlands. She had a natural aptitude for, and curiosity about, music, which guided her in building her own instruments (none of which survive today, unfortunately).

She spent two tumultuous years in London, during the late 60's, during which time she dropped out of university and acquired, through friend Ian Callow, a number of cast-off or improvised electronics, including rudimentary analog synthesizers and a four track recorder. Taking her equipment to a remote location in Wales, she lived simply, alone, and began working on music in earnest.

Most of the recordings here are taken from this period. Despite the outsider nature of her recordings, she collaborated at times, as in her excerpted collaboration with Mr. Callow on "Saw a Tree." Her interest in popular music is evidenced in her early cover of Black Sabbath and her later (post-Wales) remix of Claudio Simonetti. Most of her compositions, though, have a rough-hewn and unearthly pallor, and are exemplars of ambient before ambient gained a history.

Kailene eventually migrated to the States (around 1987), at the behest of an aunt, living with her in the wilds of Michigan until her early death, from cancer, in 1995. I, being a distant friend of her aunt's children, happened to meet her, heard some of her work, and remarked upon its quality. Upon the passing of Ms. Godheight's aunt, in 2003, I was bequeathed this material by her children, Kailene's cousins, with the expressed intention of preserving it.
